We will be using the Sadlier math program. Every day, there will be a homework sheet that supports what was learned in class.
Additionally, each day we will do the calendar and weather. As we add a new day to the calendar, students have the opportunity to learn about sequencing, patterning, numeral recognition, sums, ordinal and cardinal counting, and sequence of the months and day
Happy Numbers, a computer-assisted instructional tool, allows our children to work independently on various mathematical concepts that they will be learning in first grade. The program is highly individualized and allows students to work on their own level. This is done by consistently adjusting problems to the ability of the learner.
The math concepts focused on in kindergarten are:
Counting- Students begin their experience with numbers through counting, number names and wrtten numerals
Addition and Subtraction- early stages of adding and subtracting: using manipulatives and pictures.
Measurement & Data- Comparing objects and describing their attributes, graphing
Geometry-Introduction to 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes
We use a hands-on approach with a variety of manipulatives.
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
They kingdom come.
They will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
MORNING OFFERING
O Jesus,
through the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
I offer You my prayers, works, joys and sufferings
of this day for all the intentions
of Your Sacred Heart,
in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
throughout the world,
in reparation for my sins,
for the intentions of all my relatives and friends.
Amen.
Guardian Angel Prayer
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom GOd's love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
Grace Before Meals
Bless us, O Lord, and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive
from your bounty.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Once the children have learned letter sounds and are able to blend and decode them, chunks are introduced in the kindergarten classroom.
Chunks, which are also called rimes, are short parts of words that may be used to create other words. By blending what they already know about sounds, learners are able to build bigger words and to decode them as well.
The chunk at may be used to create many words such as bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, etc. Once students know the diagraph ch, they can create catch.
Here are some of the chunks we study in kindergarten.
cat of at
pan of an
hand of and
ball of all
sack of ack
light of ight
mice of ice
cloud of ou
cake of ake
bell of ell
As we move through the year, students become more and more adept at using chunks to become word detectives, exploring and investigating how to unlock clues to words and using them to create new words.
The learning of sight words is extremely important on the kindergarten level. Throughout the year, we study approximately 20 words each month. Knowing these words will help the students enter formal reading instruction easier as they are able to recognize, write and read many of the words they will encounter in print.
As they move through the year, these words will make their way into books, poems and stories. Knowing the words already makes it more comfortable for them as the words appear on a daily basis.
To make it enjoyable and more developementally appropriate, our kindergarten utilizes videos on youtube, Jack Hartman, Dr. Jean, Storybots, to name a few.
Each day, we sing, dance and spell words. This fun approach creates an atmosphere of little risk and results in quick learning that truly sticks.
Through our Reading program the students will learn the following words: the, little, I, am, to, a, have, is, we, my, like, he, for, she, with, me, see, look, they, of, you, are, that, do, one, two, three, four, five, here, go, from, yellow, blue, green, what, said, was come, where.
Additionally, with our phonics program Fundations the students will learn these words: and, are, is, as, be, & by.
