Hello, my name is Mrs. Valente and this is my 8th year at St. Joseph School. I have a BA in Elementary Education and American studies with a minor in history from Saint Peter's College. I started teaching 7th and 8th grade literature and social studies in a catholic school in Newark in 2001. From there I taught in the public school setting in both 1st and 2nd grade. I did take 5 years off to take care of my 5 children, before returning to teaching at Saint Joseph School. I spent my first 5 years here teaching 2nd grade and this is now my third year teaching 3rd. Teaching is my passion and there is nothing I won't do to help my students achieve success.
The best way to maintain your child’s current reading abilities over the summer is to encourage reading. They should read a minimum of 20 minutes each day. They can read books of any kind as long as they find it interesting. All students entering 3rd grade are required to read the following three books:
The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies
The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
There is an activity for each book that must be complete prior to the first day of school. Some of the activities will be completed online on our 3rd grade Google Classroom, and one will be completed on paper to be handed in on the first day. All students entering 3rd grade have already been added to my Google Classroom. https://classroom.google.com/u/0/c/MzM4MTE4MjM2MTM1 Students can find all their assignments there. All assignments will be posted on June 16th. Please practice the words below during the summer.
Enjoy your summer. I can’t wait to see you in September!
This year I have decided to purchase all needed school supplies for the students. I will collect money starting in August. I will post the amount on Google Classroom and on ClassTag once I have made the purchase. It will range between $25 to $50. This does NOT include art supplies or cleaning products. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at ivalente@sjps.net
Please practice both of the charts below everyday with your child. It is very important that they enter third grade being able to read these words independently. After the second full week of school, I will be verbally testing the students on the first chart only.
Thank you for all of your help.
Mrs. Valente
