Hello! My name is Ms. Jennifer Hyjack and I am so excited to be teaching 3rd Grade at St. Joseph School this year! This is my second year at our school.
I have been educating young people for 15 years. I received my B.A. in Communication from Rutgers University and my M.F.A. in acting from the Actors Studio Drama School. I was an arts education instructor in NYC and NJ.
The birth of my son and my passion for teaching led me to earn my Elementary certification from Montclair State University. I believe that all students should have a safe, joyful, and inclusive learning environment. I am looking forward to an amazing year!
Our class did an amazing job on their 1970's Presentations for the 100th Year Anniversary of our school!! They sang songs from the 70's and did oral and digital presentations of the different parts of the decade. In reading, students are
exploring different genres like Realistic Fiction and Informational Texts. They are learning how to identify main ideas and details and how to analyze text structure.
In writing, they are working on How-To-Articles. In math, they are continuing to master their multiplication facts. We are looking forward to all of the activities coming up during Catholic Schools Week. Students will be presenting their Magnet Engineer STREAM Lab projects that week.
The best way to maintain your child’s current reading abilities over the summer is to encourage reading. They should read a minimum of 20 minutes each day. They can read books of any kind as long as they find it interesting. All students entering 3rd grade are required to read the following three books:
The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies
The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
There is an activity for each book that must be complete prior to the first day of school. Some of the activities will be completed online on our 3rd grade Google Classroom, and one will be completed on paper to be handed in on the first day. All students entering 3rd grade have already been added to my Google Classroom. https://classroom.google.com/u/0/c/MzM4MTE4MjM2MTM1 Students can find all their assignments there. All assignments will be posted on June 16th. Please practice the words below during the summer.
Enjoy your summer. I can’t wait to see you in September!
This year I have decided to purchase all needed school supplies for the students. I will collect money starting in August. I will post the amount on Google Classroom and on ClassTag once I have made the purchase. It will range between $25 to $50. This does NOT include art supplies or cleaning products. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at ivalente@sjps.net
Please practice both of the charts below everyday with your child. It is very important that they enter third grade being able to read these words independently. After the second full week of school, I will be verbally testing the students on the first chart only.
Thank you for all of your help.

Act of Contrition
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend with your help, to do penance, to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In his name, my God, have mercy.
Amen
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
They kingdom come.
They will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death.
Amen
Grace Before Meals
Bless us, O Lord, and these they gifts, which we are about to receive
from your bounty.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Guardian Angel Prayer
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God's love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
The Exit of The Day Prayer:
We are grateful for the
signs and wonders of this day,
for ordinary events and its surprise,
big and small.
We thank you for the
loving people who surround us.
May we continue to reflect your goodness
to others in your name.
We ask this through your beloved Son, Jesus.
Amen.
Students will be using a new program called My View Literacy for Language Arts this year. They will also continue using FUNdations and Voyages. For math, we will be using Sadlier Mathematics.
