Hello! My name is Jennifer Hyjack. This is my 5th year teaching at our school. I received my B.A. in Communication from Rutgers University and my M.F.A. in acting from the Actors Studio Drama School. I earned my certification in Elementary Education K-6 from Montclair State University. I am looking forward to an amazing year!

Second Grade at SJS
Welcome to 2nd grade! This year, students will continue to grow as readers and writers using our MyView Literacy program, which helps build strong comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. We will also use Fundations to strengthen phonics, spelling, and foundational reading skills. In math, we'll be using Sadlier Progress in Mathematics to develop a deep understanding of addition and subtraction strategies, place value, measurement, time, and beginning concepts of multiplication. Second graders will also explore science and social studies topics such as life cycles, weather, communities, and important figures in history. It's going to be a fun and exciting year of learning and growth!

Second Grade Summer Reading List 2025-2026
Students are required to read a total of three books and complete item numbers 1 through 6 for each book . Each book form (front and back) will go along with each book of your choosing. Please bring each project to school on the first day of school.
You will be able to find these books at the public library. If you cannot locate them, you may order a used copy from EBAY (very inexpensive) or, if you cannot purchase one, go on YOUTUBE to read or watch the books. After your child has read the books, there is a book report form. Fill out a form for each book. Remember: Your work must be NEAT. Answer all questions in a complete sentence. Restate the question. When coloring, be sure to leave NO WHITE SPOTS!

4 boxes of tissues
1 plastic folder (any color) for homework
4 second grade composition notebooks
1 soft pencil case (to be kept in your child’s desk) 1 box of 24 crayons
2 large glue sticks
2 pink erasers
1 box of sharpened #2 pencils
1 scissor
1 pair of headphones

Curriculum
Students will be using a new reading program called My View Literacy for Language Arts this year. They will also continue using FUNdations and Voyages for phonics and grammar. For math, we will be using Sadlier Progress Mathematics. We will also be using IXL for math and reading and other digital tools to help meet our curriculum goals.
