Welcome to second grade! We are beginning to explore new learnings in reading, writing, math and science as we enter the 2022-2023 school year. Our goal is to help our students become independent thinkers and learners who will seek knowledge of the world around them. One of the most important understandings we promote is that the family is an integral part of each child's academic, social and emotional progress.
During this school year, we will be introduced to technology, writing, math, social studies and science areas. Students will continue their study of Spanish through the Rosetta Stone program. Through daily study and reinforcement, students will acquire competencies that will provide a firm foundation for further instruction in higher grades.
Not only do our students focus tructed.on learning in the content areas, but are provided with opportunities to practice new learnings and to utilize strategies to promote their own abilities to problem solve independently.
In language arts, students will be exposed to various texts and genres to provide a greater understanding of different texts and how they are constructed. By reading different texts, the learner will be able to write in a multitude of genres. Genres we will be concentrating on this year will be fiction, nonfiction, poetry, chapter books and multicultural awareness.
In mathematics, students will be exposed to different ways of problem solving, and more importantly, how to explain how they arrived at a specific answer. This understanding is metacognition and assists learners in becoming strategic in approaching new material.
Science is approached through weekly STREAM lessons, hands-on experiences which place students in the role of active scientists. Topics are selected to mirror the child's world and interests. Literacy enhances science through the reading of appropriate magazines and articles.
Social studies reflects ourselves, our community and our world. The curriculum is designed to promote citizenship and critical problem solving. Understandings will be gained via articles, newscasts, classroom magazines and group discussions.
Dear Parents,
Happy New Yeear!
As we enter 2023, exciting opportunties for learning are taking place in second grade. Be on the lookout for new and interesting ways your child is growing academically.
Music is becoming included in our curriculum. Students are receiving instruction in flutophone. The flutophone is an introductory instrument that helps teach students the basic elements of music. We are learning songs such as "Mary Had a Little Lamb", "Hot Cross Buns" and "Twinkle Twinkle LIttle Star".
Many students have requested additional instruction in Spanish. Because of this, we are implementing a "Family Spanish" component. Students are being exposed to Spanish videos in their regular Spanish classes. They are now about to receive a notebook with related videos and pictures to help them excel in language study. Students and their families will have the opportunity to review words and concepts in Spanish at home via the use of YOUTUBE. I hope everyone will take advantage of this program and all of the learning it offers.
Writing continues to be a focus of second grade. Everyone has been given a journal to write in nightly. Daily assignments feature written responses on the part of students and stress writing longer selections with correct grammar, spelling and organization. Please support your child's enthusiasm by reading and responding positively to your child's efforts!

Mr. Williamson
We're Winding Down...
Our year has gone by very quickly. Throughout the past few months, our students have grown remarkably socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. It has been a pleasure working with you and your child. I hope you have seen the progress he or she has made.
Throughout the summer, I suggest that you have your child visit the library on a regular basis and that he or she continue select books of her or her interest. There has been an interest in Spanish as well as in nonfiction topics. Please visit youtube to review appropriate topics from which your child can learn.
Respectfully submitted,
Mr. Williamson
